drug suspect keeps body on ice “for religious reasons”

March 12th, 2008

Stephen David Royds, who pled guilty to four felony drug charges in 2002, was discovered in hotel room in Newport Beach, California, with a body packed in dry ice in a large Rubbermaid container. He claims this was done for religious reasons.

Royds was arrested for investigation of possessing and selling cocaine. The body, identified as Monique Felicia Trepp, 33, was fully clothed. An autopsy was inconclusive, but her death did not appear to be a homicide. Authorities are awaiting a toxicology report to determine the cause of death.

Trepp, the deceased, was charged with several drug-related felonies in Colorado in 2005. She disappeared after posting bail.

Royds was denied parole because of a possible probation violation.

mom throws kids off bridge, jumps; all survive

March 12th, 2008

Anyone who says miracles don’t happen hasn’t heard this story

A mom in Dallas, Texas, threw her two struggling children (ages six and eight) off of a freeway overpass DURING RUSH HOUR; then SHE jumped as well. All three survived. Police say they landed on the concrete in the far left of the westbound lanes. Both of the sons were listed in stable condition.

Not surprisingly, the mother has a criminal record. Child Protective Services has intervened twice before. The mother could face attempted capital murder charges for her actions.

man blames wife-beating on dialysis, gas prices

March 3rd, 2008

From Local6 in Orland, FL:

A 77-year-old man told a deputy he roughed up his 74-year-old wife because he was upset about the high cost of gas for driving her to and from dialysis treatments, according to police…

I’m not sure if I am more shocked or amused. Not that an assault is ever amusing- but seriously, can you think of a more ridiculous motive?

bite mark evidence disputed in hundreds of cases

March 3rd, 2008

In a small town in rural Mississippi, the “expert testimony” of Dr. Micheal West, a forensic odontologist, has become disputed after two men, convicted on the basis of his testimony and little else, have been freed after a third man confessed to their crimes.  This brings into question hundreds of other convictions that included his testimony.

Though I did not study forensics, I have considered it, but this is one of the reasons I do not want to go into this field.  To send a man to jail is a great responsibility.  In this day of ever-improving technology, an entire case can unravel on the basis of one minute element.  You could stake your professional reputation on the guilt of a person, and go down in flames years later when the conviction is overturned on the basis of newly-discovered evidence (DNA or otherwise).

I don’t know Dr. West, and I am not at all familiar with his profession or with any of his cases.  But I know that I don’t want to go through what he is surely going through right now - the questioning, the unknowns, the self-doubt.

But perhaps worst of all… Dr. West’s downfall will undoubtedly lead some judges to overturn other convictions.  Undoubtedly, some legitimate criminals will go free.

former congressional candidate Gary Dodds convicted of faking disappearance

February 21st, 2008

Gary Dodds, a candidate for New Hampshire’s District 1 congressional seat, was found guilty on Wednesday of falsifying evidence, causing false public alarm, and leaving the scene of an accident in April 2006.

At that time, Dodds’ Lincoln-Continental hit a guardrail. Dodds claims that he suffered a head injury and wandered off dazed for the next 27 hours, during which time he nearly drowned in a river and suffered hypothermia in the snowy woods. However, police discovered a great deal of evidence contradicting Dodds’ statements. Police describe the damage to his vehicle as “very, very minor”. A pewter-colored extended-cab pickup truck was seen leaving the scene of the accident moments later. When he was rescued 27 hours after the accident, his clothing was dry, except for his shoes and socks. His feet were purple and wrinkled, but the rest of his skin was pink, dry, and healthy. An expert on cold-weather injuries testified that this must have resulted from Dodds soaking his feet in cold water for an extended period of time.

He’s a politician. I certainly wouldn’t trust him!

teen places hit on parents

February 21st, 2008

Two teenagers from Truman High School, Independence, MO are in police custody under suspicion of a murder-for-hire plot. Police say that one of the teens, 18-year-old Jacob Jett, felt that his parents were too strict and wanted them dead so that he could receive his inheritance. The other teenager, 17-year-old Joseph Garcia, is accused of introducing Jett to the would-be hit men.

The alleged plot unraveled when one of the would-be hit men was picked up on a parole violation and confessed the scheme to police. The killings never happened, and both teenagers could face life in prison if convicted.
